Alternator Regulator

One sign you might need new alternator brushes/voltage regulator is when your headlights run dim and the engine starts slowly, etc. This usually happens after about 100k-140k miles. Of course, you should check the condition of the battery, etc. If you need a new alternator voltage regulator/brushes this might save you some money. The brushes pictured here are sold for a 1985 VW rabbit but work perfectly in my 85-87 Saabs. You usually don't need a completely new alternator unless the bearings go bad.

This voltage regulator cost between $12 and $25 dollars. That's well below the cost of the "Saab" part. I have used this brand in three of our Saabs ('85-'87 900t) with no problems. I bought it at Bap-Geon foreign auto parts store. Any foreign parts store should have it.

UPDATE (12/16/01):
I found bosch brand voltage regulator/brushes for $29.99 on http://www.eeuroparts.com/
